Fort William & Ardnamurchan Ward

The official title for our council area is Ward 22, though most people know it as the Fort William and Ardnamurchan Ward—a name that better reflects the communities it serves.

Following the re-organisation of ward boundaries, the Fort William and Ardnamurchan ward was created for the local elections in 2007, electing four councillors. This “super-ward” of nearly 11,500 residents combined several smaller, more localised wards, dramatically increasing the scale and complexity of representation.

Spanning a vast 2,600 square kilometres, the ward stretches from Ardnamurchan Point in the west to Corrour in the east. It includes the major population centre of Fort William and the larger villages of Ballachulish, Kinlochleven, and Strontian.

It’s a diverse ward with many competing interests and demands, with a significant rural population and many residents living in scattered or remote communities. Unfortunately, decision-making remains dominated by councillors in Inverness who often lack an understanding of the unique geographic and economic challenges faced by our communities. This problem doesn’t just affect Lochaber—other areas such as Skye and Badenoch have also suffered as a result of an Inverness-centred council that fails to prioritise rural needs.

Many residents still assume they have a single councillor representing them, when in reality, all four councillors are responsible for the entire ward. This has too often allowed some councillors to neglect certain areas or shift responsibility to someone else. My approach is simple: if you come to me with an issue, I will do my best to help, regardless of where you live in the ward.
